Operations / Procedures

If your treatment requires an operation / procedure, your available options will be discussed at the time of the consultation. An estimate of fees / quotation will be provided after the consultation, together with an informed financial consent (IFC) form. The IFC will need to be signed and returned prior to the operation.

Our fees have been developed in accordance with the Australian Medical Association (AMA) and the Medical Benefits Scheme (MBS) as set out by the Australian Health Service Alliance (AHSA) and Medicare.

Note: All payments are required at least 2 days prior to your procedure.

Private Health Insurance

Depending on your insurance policy, such as level of coverage, you may elect to use your private health insurance and have your operation / procedure at a private hospital facility (e.g. North Shore Private Hospital or Chris O’Brien Lifehouse). However, you may also choose to be admitted as a private patient in a public hospital (e.g. Royal Prince Alfred Hospital). You may need to check with your health fund to determine if the proposed operation (as indicated by the quoted item numbers) is covered by your insurance policy.

Out of pocket expenses (gap)

For certain operations / procedures, additional out of pocket expenses (“gap”) may apply. The “gap” is the difference between the surgical fees for the operation / procedure and the amount your health fund is willing to cover. Where the gap payment is greater than the “Known gap” amount as specified by your private health fund, upfront payment for the entire surgical fee is requested prior to the operation. Your health fund can reimburse the covered amount directly to you later.

In some circumstances, Eminence Neurosurgery will offer patients a “No-Gap”, or “Known Gap” option. For “known gap”, payment of the gap amount only will be required prior to the operation.

Medicare

If you do not have private health insurance, or choose not to use your health cover, you can be admitted as a public patient at a public hospital (e.g. Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.) You will not be charged any out of pocket costs, and the operation will be covered under Medicare. You will be placed on the waiting lists at the public hospital, and a date will be assigned for your operation depending on the urgency of cases placed on the waiting list. At the time of the consultation, a recommendation for admission form will be completed, specifying the urgency category of your operation. Waiting period on the waiting list may vary, and can be as long as 365 days.
